Kota Kinabalu — The Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA) today held the ‘Future Talent Connect’ Sharing Session Series 1.0 which took place at Azman Hashim Gallery, Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS). This event recorded as many as 125 participants consisting of prospective graduates, alumni and academicians from institutes of higher education.

The objectives for organising the sharing session are as follows:

  1. To inspire and nurture interest in career paths related to the shared topics among the target groups, consisting of the younger generations and teenagers;
  2. To build and establish close relationships with the target groups and the invitees who are also career leaders in the related shared topics; and
  3. To collect and analyse relevant data and information to be used at the relevant opportunity and on the appropriate agenda for the benefit of human capital development.

Carrying the theme of ‘Agro-technology and Bioeconomy’, the programme focuses on the future workforce through the transition of conventional operations towards modern systems in agriculture and food industries. The use of technologies such as smart farming, system integration, and agricultural drones is fast becoming widely used. Additionally, this transition will see higher-yielding food crops and promote sustainable production in the context of the bioeconomy. This is made possible through the development of operations system technology that allows farmers to easily conduct agriculture activities that used to be done manually.

In delivering his opening remarks, SEDIA Chief Executive Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hashim bin Paijan said ‘SEDIA is confident that using an approach that combines Agro Technology and Bioeconomy will be able to bring Sabah’s agricultural sector to a higher, competitive and sustainable level. The younger generation also plays an important role in this change, we need to give them support and opportunities to become game changers’. These sharing sessions therefore serve as an ideal platform for career leaders in agro-technology and bioeconomy services to build career opportunities for the younger generations and teenagers, as well as to increase the country’s agricultural and food production for food security.

The guest speakers who shared topics throughout the inaugural session consisted of representatives of various agencies including Matthew Johnny Kulai (CEO of AgriData Portal Sdn. Bhd), Cornelius Chong (Founder of A Leaf), Christabel Loni Jiram (Senior Manager of Malaysia Bioeconomy Development Corporation Sdn Bhd), Mohd Ridwan bin Amirudin (Chief Executive Officer of AnginDotCom UAS Training & Services Sdn Bhd), and Siti Zuriani Zakaria from REDtone IoT of the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Sdn Bhd (MDEC).

Several initiatives under the Sabah Development Corridor (SDC) — as outlined in the SDC Blueprint 2.0 — are closely related to the shared topics, particularly:

  • Initiative #4: Knowledge Hubs;
  • Initiative #14: Green Technology Development Centre;
  • Initiative #20: Workforce of the Future
  • Initiative #22: Workforce expansion; and
  • Initiative #27: Next Gen Farmer-entrepreneurs.

From these sharing sessions, it is hoped that interest and positive impact can be fostered among the younger generations towards meeting the criteria of their future careers that may be oriented towards the use of smart technology in line with the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
