Fifth 'Gerak IKS SDC 2016' roadshow in Tambunan

  Tambunan (Friday) - The fifth leg of the 'Gerak IKS SDC 2016' roadshow will be held during 12-14 October at Tambunan community hall, promoting initiatives that target the development of local Small and Medium Industries (SMIs) and Entrepreneurs (SMEs). The upcoming stop for the roadshow will see participants coming from the vicinity of Tambunan and also Ranau. The three-day event, planned in collaboration with local authorities chaired by the Tambunan District Office, is organised by the Sabah Economic Development and Investment Authority (SEDIA), Unit Peneraju Agenda Bumiputera (TERAJU), and SME Corporation (SME Corp).  

The roadshow will have its closing ceremony officiated by Deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Infrastructure Development Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan on the 14th of October 2016. The event has been organised in partnership with local authorities, State and Federal agencies, and chambers of commerce, with the goal of promoting and sharing information regarding entrepreneurship development programmes that are made available through SEDIA, TERAJU, SME Corp, and other participating agencies.

Open to the general public, the Gerak IKS SDC 2016 programme had been conducted at four locations thus far, comprising Kimanis, Sipitang, Sandakan and Kota Marudu, and had seen around 8,000 people reached out over the past four roadshows. Each roadshow comprises of talks covering various industry opportunities and business assistance, business matching opportunities, advisory services by government agencies, as well as a mini exhibition to display the products of entrepreneurs and start-ups, including those developed under the SAIP business incubator programme. Participants will also have the opportunity to register for SEDIA and TERAJU incubator and accelerator programmes as well as facilitation grants for Bumiputera entrepreneurs.

A key aspect of the Gerak IKS SDC 2016 roadshow is the promotion of the TERAJU facilitation fund and Sabah SME/SMI development fund. The latter was announced by the Prime Minister during the Budget Speech 2015. SEDIA and TERAJU had formalised collaboration for expediting the fund through an agreement signed in August 2015, and have begun implementing entrepreneurship development programmes for Bumiputera SMEs and start-ups. The fund is divided into two major components: capacity building and business financing.

Capacity building efforts are aimed at creating awareness on the business opportunities in Sabah especially under the SDC, and providing basic entrepreneurship training programmes throughout Sabah. Business financing initiatives through the fund are divided into the Business Incubation Programme and Business Accelerator Programme. The incubation programme is designed to encourage the creation of new entrepreneurs especially in knowledge-intensive sectors; meant to create greater awareness of business opportunities as well as facilitate access to business support and shared services. The accelerator programme will mainly facilitate access to financing for existing Bumiputera SMEs seeking business expansion. These programmes will complement existing Teras and Facilitation grants under TERAJU@SDC which have been implemented in the SDC under the joint supervision of SEDIA and TERAJU.
