Enhancing Knowledge on Packaging and Labelling for Sabah's Entrepreneurs
 

Kota Kinabalu (Thursday) - SEDIA organised AgroSAIP course today, which centred on Product Labelling and Packaging and was designed especially for the new recruits of local entrepreneurs who were selected under the SDC's SME Incubation Programme.

SEDIA organises an entrepreneurial training course for SMEs, as part of SEDIA's ongoing effort to support the local SMEs in SDC. Labelling and packaging is one of the significant aspects before the distribution process of a product. To an extent, the labelling and packaging of a product, not only attracts and entices its potential customers but also it provides important and useful information for them to make an informed choices. In addition, meeting the labelling and packaging requirement is important to stay competitive and when one wants to expand a product in a market.

The Product Labelling and Packaging course is part of a series of courses structured by SEDIA to help develop the local agro-entrepreneurs. The one-day course presented five papers. The first paper, The Importance of Branding, Labelling and Packaging in Product Marketing, was presented by Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (FAMA), Mr. Mohd Lizal bin Buang. Paper Two and Three were presented by Mdm Nik Hafizah Nik Ubaidillah of Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI) KK which covered the topic Food Quality Control and Sanitation in Food Processing and Product Packaging Materials, Technology and Machine. Meanwhile MARDI Serdang, Encik Mohd Romainor Manshor contributed two topics: Graphic and Structural Design and Graphics in Product Packaging; and Trademark, Bar Code and Brand.

The AgroSAIP training course was held at Sabah Agro-Industrial Precinct (SAIP), Kimanis, Papar and was attended by 78 participants ranging from participants of SDC Incubation programme, other SMEs and the local public. SAIP is one of SDC flagship projects, which serves as a test-bed for carrying out biotech-driven research and development (R&D) and to develop biotech-driven businesses as well as offers various facilities especially for the agro-industries. SAIP has a distinct focus on Specialty Natural Products (SNP), agro-biotech and health food products. Further to that, SAIP is also a specialized area for integrated agricultural product processing with the objective, among others, for SMEs/SMIs capacity building as well as for incubators who are in the downstream activities of the agro-food and agro-biotech industries.

SEDIA fully supports the agro-industry development goal to enhance the skills, expertise and capabilities of the labour forces in the agricultural biotechnology. Todate, SEDIA has successfully conducted over 34 courses since AgroSAIP Training programme was introduced in 2012, benefitting around 1,888 participants from all over the state.
